I got an inexpensive flatbed USB scanner and was disappointed with the bundled (Windows-only) software, so I tried it on Linux. Debian Etch installs xsane by default, but it would not recognize the scanner. I tried a whole bunch of things but nothing help, until I accidentally started xsane from a root terminal, and it “just worked”, despite the warning from xsane about running as root.

I had the same Problem with the USB scanner CanoScan LiDE 25. Trying it as root worked for me too. I also got some strange messages in dmesg:
ppdev0: registered pardevice
ppdev0: unregistered pardevice
thousends of them. Strange thing is ther isn’t a /dev/ppdev0 device.

There’s a solution, even though I don’t remember how it’s done. I’ve done it work as a normal user in debian lenny, but I’ve recently reinstalled everything and I’m looking for it again…

I’ve got the lide60 and I’ll agree the windows software is not nearly as good as xsane – it seems to give much better control over the scan generally.
